Notice that there was no Benedict X.  His number was skipped by the Papal officials when they assigned numbers to the Benedict after Benedict IX.  But, notice the count number does not skip for it is a count of the individuals present.  The number assigned to the pope by the papacy is only a clue to how this is done - their Roman numerals are not actually used in the counting system.  Instead, you simply count the popes in each papal name line and add. That's it.  This is nearly identical to the way the Babylonians did it to calculate 666 for their gods.

Note that Benedict IX was pope 3 different times, but he is counted as one pope.

Notice there was no John XVI or John XX.  Like all other pope names, simply count the popes present in each name line and then add the count.  That's the way the Babylonians did it to calculate 666.  Don't use the numbers assigned by the papacy for the count but merely count them.

Now simply add up the total of the counts for all 7 names.

78 +  91  +  136  +  105  + 231  + 21  + 3  =  665 as of John Paul II

78 +  91  +  136  +  120  + 231  + 21  + 3  =  680 as of Benedict XVI

In spite of the fact that the count total now stands at 680, the final total when Jesus comes will be 666. How is that possible? Well, Benedict XVI is one of the seven names of the popes that have occurred since 1798, and after a few years of reign, he will change his name to a new Papal name, which has a count of 1, which will bring the count total to 666. Here is how we know this. In Revelation 17:11, it says that the 8th (king) is out of the 7 (kings). This means that following the one after the "one is" (the John Paul name line), there is a return to one of the 7 names of popes used after 1798 and that particular person will later change names to become the 8th king. The name he dies with is the one which ultimately counts towards the total, so since he will die with a name that has a count total of 1, he will be the man who is the receiver of the number 666.

It works like this:

John Paul II adds 2 to the count total (previously at 663) which then stands at 665.

Benedict XVI add 15 to the count total which then stands at 680.

Benedict XVI changes names, so subtract 15 from the count total. The count total then stands at 665.

Benedict XVI's new name will be a new Papal name not used before in Papal history, so will add a count of 1 to the count total. Then 665 + 1 = 666.

Or mathematically:

Papal Name
Count Added
Total of Count
John Paul II 2 663 + 2 = 665
Benedict XVI 15 665 + 15 = 680
Subtract for removing Benedict XVI name -15 680 - 15 = 665
Add 1 for a new Papal name 1 665 + 1 = 666

A name change has never happened in Papal history. The author has been told that there have been several instances in which popes tried to change their names but it was not permitted. Therefore, because the Bible predicts that the eighth king of Revelation 17 will start with a name from among the seven used after 1798, to then change to a new unique name in Papal history will break the rules and will be totally unprecedented in Papal history. It will be a terrible shock to everyone when they realize what this means - the 8th king is here! The end is coming!

*** Notice that for the Years Reigned column, those in office less than 1 year are rounded up to 1 year (except for Benedict XVI).  The Years Reigned numbers are simply based on the absolute years shown.  Months in office over or less than any given year are not accounted for.  Thus, a Calendar Years in Office listing of say 1559-1565 would produce a difference of 6 years.  This is not entirely accurate because this person might have been in office at the end of 1559 and ended at the beginning of 1565 so would have been in office a little over 5 years, but we cannot know this from the information given, 1559-1565.  So, the totals are not entirely accurate, but do give a reasonably good idea of the total numbers of years any given papal name held office over the centuries.

This helps in relation to Revelation 17:10 which says "And there are seven kings: five are fallen, and one is, and the other is not yet come; and when he cometh, he must continue a short space."  The phrase "must continue a short space" is where this is helpful for one can put the reign times in perspective for the 7 papal names and see that the 7th name, John Paul, indeed did remain only a short space (of time) relative to the other 6 names.

Here is a table showing the relative amounts of time of office held by each of the 7 papal names over the centuries (table as of late April of 2005):

Papal Name Total Time Office is Held (in years) For All Popes In Each Name Total Time (in years) From the Beginning of the First Pope's reign to the End of the Last Pope's Reign of Each Papal Name

You can see that the Pope John Pauls have been in office by far the least amount of time of all the 7 papal names by either measure! This fulfills the condition given in Revelation 17:10 which says that the one who occurs after the "one is" remains only a short while (remember that the "one is" is the Pope Paul line and the one after that is the Pope John Paul line). The short time of the John Paul line by either measure clearly is in contrast with the times of the other names.
